The Entourage Effect

Most athletes are intimately familiar with the phrase, “There’s no ‘I’ in team.” It’s a familiar adage, especially in team sports, that is shouted by coaches in almost every sport at every level. It means that no single person’s needs, abilities or ideas are any more important than the combined skills and efforts of the entire group.

And while it’s true that certain teams may have one or two superstar athletes who routinely carry their teams to victory, it’s also true that they can’t do it alone. On any championship caliber team, there are lots of players who support the efforts of their superstars, working together toward a common goal.

ENTOURAGE EFFECT
The idea that cannabis compounds work together to produce more benefits and higher efficacy than when taken alone.

The same is true for CBD, in what is called the ‘Entourage Effect.’ First described by renown cannabis science pioneer and leading contributor to endocannabinoid research, Dr. Ethan Russo, MD, the Entourage Effect describes the idea that the effects of the entire group of cannabinoids in broad spectrum CBD products is greater than merely the effects of it’s biggest star, CBD.

Indeed, CBD has become the catch-all term for cannabinoids found in the Cannabis plant. But with over a hundred cannabinoids found in the Cannabis plant, it makes sense that one would rise to ubiquity. And just like the star of any given team, CBD may very well be the most effective cannabinoid in the group, but it’s what the rest of the cannabinoids do that enables CBD to shine so brightly.

Peripheral cannabinoids and terpenes, which are aromatic compounds, help to create distinct products with varying characteristics of taste and smell, which can increase the perceived effect of the product. Some familiar terpenes in cannabis like myrcene, pinene, limonene, and caryophyllene are also found in everyday items like hops, lemongrass, pine needles, rosemary, juniper, peppermint, cloves and black pepper.

To put it in sports terms, a home run (CBD) is great. But a home run with three teammates (CBG, CBN, CBC, for example) on base is a grand slam!

Your shooting guard scoring 60 points is great. But the rest of your starters adding 38 points and your bench adding 22 more is what really sweetens the victory.

Our Broad Spectrum Mint Drops are a great way to experience the Entourage Effect for yourself. Find them in our Sleep Kit, Relax Kit, and Starter Kit as well!
